How Bergen Harbour Hotel turned tight space into happy guests

Bergen Harbour Hotel, part of the Bergen Harbour group, had the problem every city hotel knows: small rooms and guests who say so in their reviews. A year with MASE later, the reviews tell a different story, and the hotel wants more rooms.

Small rooms, honest guests

Guests on Tripadvisor, Google and booking.com don't hold back. One of the most common complaints we see about city hotels is that the rooms feel small and cramped.

It's easy to see why rooms get smaller. Every square metre of a new hotel costs around 5,000 euros in building materials alone, before land, interiors and everything else. So you face a hard choice as a hotelier: big rooms that cost a lot to build, or small rooms that guests call cramped.

Bergen Harbour Hotel chose a third option. Keep the room, use it smarter.

How it works in the room

In the MASE rooms, the bed sits up in the ceiling during the day. The floor is free and the room works as a lounge. At night, one tap and the bed comes down. Same square metres, two rooms. We call it 6 m² for the price of 1.

There was no building work. Two of our people set each bed up in 3 to 4 hours, and nothing is fixed to the walls or ceiling. The bed is made in Italy, has a 5-year warranty, and stops by itself if something is in the way.

"We weren't convinced at first"

The hotel took its time, and we understand why. A robotic bed in a hotel room is new, and you can't experiment on your guests. So they started with a pilot and watched what guests said.

"We were honestly a bit sceptical. A bed in the ceiling sounded like something that could go wrong. But our guests love it. The room feels bigger, and the reviews say so."

Through high season, every night

The real test came this summer. Through the 2026 high season the beds were in daily use, night after night, in a full hotel. They worked, and guests noticed.

"Highly recommended!! This hotel is simply amazing! The location is great, just one street away from Bryggen. Our room had a motorized bed which can be raised to the ceiling in order to make more space in the same room. Floor area is increased drastically giving more living space. Try to book a room with such a bed."

Guest review on Tripadvisor

"We're proud to work with a hotel that takes its guests' feedback this seriously," says Susanne Sekkesæter, CEO and co-founder of MASE. "They tested it properly, in real operation, and now they want more rooms. That's the best proof we could ask for."

What's next

Bergen Harbour Hotel is now looking to add more MASE rooms. For us, it shows what robotics and automation can do for a hotel: a small room that feels bigger, happier guests and better reviews, without adding a single square metre.
